Dr. Silas Dean Presbrey

Dr. Silas Dean Presbrey, a lifelong resident of the Weir, was appointed the first city physician of Taunton around 1865. He was born in Taunton on Oct 19, 1838 to Billings Tropp and Clariss Burt (Dean) Presbrey and died on Oct. 23, 1917, buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
He married Sarah Williams Briggs on Oct.19, 1863. She was the daughter of Artemas and Susan Shaw (Williams) Briggs. Sarah who was born in Taunton on Sept. 19, 1839.
They had three daughters. Clara Briggs was born in Taunton on Aug. 26, 1864 and died May 7, 1946. She studied for two years at Harvard Annex and then went into the Arts Department. She was an artist and painted portraits.
Another daughter, Florence Nathalie, was born in Taunton on Aug. 20, 1869 and died March 27, 1964. She was a graduate of Smith College in Northampton.
Laura Edith was born in Taunton on Aug. 24, 1871 and died Oct. 12, 1891. She was a junior at Smith College in Northampton when she died.
Dr. Silas Dean Presbrey died at his home on Oct. 23, 1917 and was buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. His wife Sarah died Aug. 18, 1893. Sarah, their three daughters and Silas’s parents are all buried with him at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
