WHITINGHAM -- Alice Janette Powers, 92, a resident of Fuller Hill Road, died Tuesday afternoon, March 27, 2001, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington where she had resided since March 1.
Born in Monroe, Mass., on March 11, 1909, she was the daughter of Frank E. and Florence E. (Cosgrove) Harvey. When she was an infant her family moved to Readsboro where she spent her childhood and attended local schools.
She was married to Truman J. Powers in Wilmington on June 25, 1932. Mr. Powers died Aug. 19, 1989.
For many years, she and her husband had operated a farm in Whitingham where she would help cut wood for the farm, drive the horses and in the winter, boil the sap into maple syrup as her husband would be busy gathering and tending to the farm chores and milking the cattle.
In addition, she would spend much of the fall canning the harvest for the winter months and making jelly from the berries she had picked.
Mrs. Powers enjoyed working in her flower gardens around her home, quilting and making pillows. She was a member of the Community Church of Whitingham Ladies Aid Society and in later years enjoyed attending senior events in Jacksonville.
She is survived by two sons, Merton Powers of Texas, and Chester Powers of Newfane; three daughters, Pearl Green of Wilmington, Clara Boyd of Whitingham, and Myrtle Bickel of Torrington, Conn.; two sisters, Flora Tracy of Vernon, and Carrie Tracy of Brattleboro; 34 grandchildren; 92 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Henry, George, and Leslie Harvey; two sisters, Helen Henry and Dorothy Underhill; and a grandson, Gary Francis Powers.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 30, at 4 p.m. at the Covey & Allen Funeral Home in Wilmington with the Rev. John Brigham, pastor of the Community Church of Whitingham, officiating. Burial will take place later in the spring in the Fuller Cemetery in Whitingham. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 3 p.m. until the hour of the service.
