Judith "Jane" Moorman

(Abt 1752 - Bef Oct 1775)

According to tradition, Jane Moorman only lived about six months after the marriage to William Haden. Have seen one account where she lived about a year, long enough to be mother to Sally, oldest daughter of William. Same account said Sally married Thomas Proctor in Bedford County, VA., but I can't place this William Haden's family as ever having lived in Bedford County. William Haden's daughter Sally did marry Thomas Proctor as proved by William Haden's estate settlement, but no marriage record can be found. [see Wm Haden notes for more about Bedford Co] It is much more likely Sally & Thomas Proctor married in Fayette Co KY.

Irene Cook gives her name as Judith "Jane" I have seen a marriage to Judith Moorman as a 5th marriage. Perhaps this explains the confusion in the given name. There is proof for only two marriages for William Haden - to Nancy Johnson in 1775, Goochland Co VA and to Mrs. Sarah Johnston in 1807, Logan Co KY.

Email information from Moorman researcher states that she was possibly a sister to William Moorman that married Jane Haden as his first wife. Apparently they have not found any documentation to prove that William Haden really married Judith (or Jane) Moorman either.

Ancestral File says married circa 1768, but that was a bit too early given the age of William Haden.

HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES by John Bennett Boddie, Vol IV, 1960; p.21 "Moorman of Virginia" by Mrs. James E. O'Donnell. This article does have early data on the Moormans, now disputed. But it also does show the marriage of Judith Moorman to William Haden. Judith is placed as a child of Achilles Moorman and Elizabeth Adams along with Charles, Silas, Andrew, Jesse, and the William Moorman who married William Haden's sister Jane. Mrs. O'Donnell gives as her sources the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg VA & the Court Records of Campbell & Bedford Counties.

However, another piece of information lends weight to this marriage, as well as the fact Sally might have been the daughter of Judith/Jane Moorman. The exact date of birth of James Haden, eldest son of William Haden and wife Nancy Johnson is in the family papers of Patricia Ann Ennis Reid. Unfortunately, these were records handed down to her without sources. William Haden & Nancy Johnson married on 31 Oct 1775 as recorded in "The Douglas Register". The date of the birth of their son James as given in Mrs. Reid's papers was 13 Nov 1776 - a date that would indicate James as their first child, 13 months after the marriage.

The questions remain. What was the source of the date of birth of James? Is it correct? Was Sally really the oldest as tradition dictates? If she was oldest and James was born in 1776, then Sally was not a daughter of Nancy Johnson, but an earlier wife who may very well have been Judith Moorman. Or Sally may have been the second child of Nancy Johnson and Judith did not have any surviving children.

Ancestral File says she died 1772-1773, Goochland
