Stuart A. "Sarge" Nichols, 69, of Fort Smith passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, in a local hospice unit. He was born in Fort Smith to his parents, Eugene and Peggy (Matlock) Nichols. After losing his father at a young age, he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Warren Fahrner. An Army veteran, he later went on to work for Trane Industries in the paint department. He was a hot rod enthusiast and was a lifetime member and technical adviser for Inliner International and a long-term member of the N.H.R.A (National Hot Rod Association). He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker-Putman Funeral Home in Fort Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn, of the home; two sons, Christopher Nichols and Daniel Nichols and his wife Karla, all of Fort Smith; one sister, Margaret Bradford and her husband Howard of Cookson, Okla.; and one granddaughter, Meighan Randolph of Omaha, Neb.
Pallbearers will be Stan Dobbs, Jessie Michaels, Jack Michaels, David Davidson, Mike Smith and Jim Green.
Honorary pallbearers will be Albert Cates, Darrell Pullen and Lloyd Vaughn.
Memorials may be made to either Wesley United Methodist, 2200 Phoenix Ave., Fort Smith, AR 72901; or to the Sebastian County Humane Society, 3800 Kelley Hwy., Fort Smith, AR 72904.
The family will visit with friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
