Shirley Clark August 23, 1928 - April 14, 2013 Resident of Danville, California Shirley Austin Clark, 84, recent resident of Danville, California, died early in the morning of April 14, 2013 in the company of her daughter Kim. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona on August 23, 1928 to Wilfred and Dorothy Sargent Austin. A graduate of the University of Arizona in 1950 and member of Delta Gamma, Shirley met and married Richard S. Clark and lived the itinerant life of a family in the employ of the FBI. She enjoyed a world rich with family and friends living both in the U.S. (Tucson, Omaha, Chicago, Des Moines, Indio, and Tampa) and abroad (San Juan, Puerto Rico; Mexico City, Mexico; and London, England) before retiring in San Diego and La Jolla, California. A world traveler whose experiences included a reception with the Queen of England and meeting President John Kennedy, Shirley still considered herself a "Zonie". Though an Arizona native at heart she was no fool and preferred living in the more tolerable climate of San Diego. Shirley and Dick celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the summer of 2000 on a riverboat in Mission Bay attended by scores of long-time friends and family. Shirley will be lovingly remembered by all. Everyone wanted to include Shirley in their plans. A great listener, she made you feel you were the center of her world. She was game for any invitation involving fun and friends, be it a competitive game of tennis or bridge or hosting a dinner party. Shirley was also generous, including her work with PEO as well as sustained contributions to her beloved PBS. And she was a delight in conversation, able to draw upon her catholic tastes in literature or her trips with Earthwatch and Elderhostel. Her children remember her as someone very appreciative of her life, who always thought of others first and never complained about anything. She was a smart, kind, funny and fun-loving woman who managed to be both generous and sensible. In life she was a friend and compass and in death will remain a source of inspiration, a gracious example of what we are all capable of becoming. "Momommy" to her grandchildren, Shirley's home was a favorite place to be spoiled. Trips to the zoo or to the Padres game would be mixed with chile rellenos from Don Carlos and frozen yogurt at Froglanders. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her sister Marian Hicklin Beam of Chester, Virginia; daughters Karen Chambless of El Paso, Texas; Christina Clark of Bloomfield, New Jersey; Kimberly Clark of Danville, California; son Christopher Clark of Miami, Florida; and grandchildren Austin Frawley, Taryn Frawley, Kasey Nippes, Maarten Dijkstra, and Hanna Dijkstra. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
