Irene Cook gives Sarah as possible child of Joseph because Sarah and Richmond Pearson often signed for Joseph, Sr. on legal documents and Richmond continued to do so after Sarah died. Joseph does not name a Sarah in his will, nor her children, but they wouldn't need anything since Pearson was very well off and Sarah was already deceased. Most of the early estimates of Joseph's age make him younger than I believe he was - if he married Elizabeth Hundley about the time of his father's gift of 200 acres, November 1756, then usually estimated years for the birth of Sarah and her marriage to Pearson become plausible.

Marriage of Sarah Haden & Richmond Pearson took place in Goochland County VA, 1772. "Both of Albemarle County". It is recorded in The Douglas Register. The birth of their first child, Betsey, was also recorded the the Register.
Sarah was probably at least 16 when she married so she might have been born in 1756, about the time of the gift of land from Anthony Haden to his son Joseph.

An old book, Historical Sketches of North Carolina from 1584-1851, by John Hill Wheeler, Lippincott, Grambo & Co, 1851, p.385, had this to say about Richmond Pearson's wife, "By his first wife, Miss Hayden, he had three sons, Jesse A. Pearson, Joseph and Richmond Pearson, and Betsey, who married Hon. John Stokes.

Images of this will reveal that she gave a Negro girl about age 5, named Mary, to Sarah Pearson. The only disposition made. This is curious. Richmond's marriage to Eliza Mumford did not take place until later in 1791. She is never referred to as Elizabeth, only Eliza. If Sarah Haden Pearson was living in March of 1791, to be the beneficiary, Richmond stayed unmarried only a few months - and it's curious who Elizabeth, the witness, was. Betsey, daughter of Richmond, was likely an Elizabeth, but she's thought to be the Betsey Pearson that married John Stokes in 1788 - Stokes died in 1790. This would seem to be Richmond's daughter dying, probably without issue - her husband had died the year previous.
