Eliza R. Newman

(1810 - )

1880 Census: Eliza with Mary and George still at home. She stated that both her parents were born in Pennsylvania.

A WorldConnect file has Eliza & Josiah Newman as children of a George & Mary Newman of Pennsylvania with no further data. I am not so sure Josiah and Eliza were brother and sister ...they may have had a different kinship. It appears that Josiah may have been the son of a Benjamin Newman of Jefferson Co MS.

I found the abstract of a will from Jefferson Co MS, Book A - Benjamin Newman, dated 2 Oct 1818. He named his wife Olive, eldest son as Isaac. Other sons were Reuben B., Uriah, and Josiah. Daughters were Maria Irwin, and Frances and Betsey Newman. "Betsey" could of course be a nickname for Eliza, but there was no Samuel T. in these children and the following article indicates Eliza had a brother Samuel. Uriah & Josiah Newman of Jefferson Co MS, took out two land patents in Madison Co MS, November of 1827. By 1831, a Josiah Newman was living in Madison Co, and acquiring more land adjoining that of William M. Haden. The possibility exists that there were two Josiah Newmans in Madison Co.

There was also a will of a Simeon Newman, dated 16 Dec 1825. He named a daughter Eliza Martha. [it's possible that could be Eliza and Martha as commas are so often omitted] But Simon had no son named Samuel, either.

From the HARTFORD/HERALD NEWSPAPER on microfilm for the year 1881:
MRS. ELIZA NEWMAN HADEN was born in Mississippi and died at the home of her daughter in Paradise, Ky, May 21 1881 age 72 years, she was the sister of Dr. S. T. NEWMAN of St. Louis, the only member of the family now living, She was educated at Bardstown, Ky and a member of the M. E. CHURCH SOUTH for thirty-five years. Dr. Samuel T. Newman was born in Mississippi 11-30-1816

Not the right Samuel:
A Samuel T. Newman married Mary Ann Elmore, 1 Jan 1833, Jefferson Co TN and they are listed in the 1850 census, Jefferson Co. He is stated to have been born 1810, TN. He seems to have been Samuel J. Newman instead and probably son of a Margaret.
