Wiley Baker

(8 Dec 1831 - 2 Jan 1863)

The Journal of Robert Julius Baker records the birth of a Wiley Baker as 8 Dec 1831.

In 1860, he was living at home with his parents. I believe he was never married to Loudema Riley - just conceived a son with her because three months before the birth of Abijah, she married George Fox. The death certificate of Abijah, names his father as Wiley Baker; his mother as Ludema Riley, both born Breathitt Co.

Wiley served with his three brothers Granville, James and Isaac in Company I of the 8th Regiment of Kentucky Infantry. He enlisted as a Sergeant on November 13, 1861 and mustered in on January 15, 1862.
On October 8, 1862 the 8th fought in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky. The battle involved 38,000 troops and resulted in 4,300 Union casualties and 3,400 Confederate. This was the largest battle fought in the State of Kentucky during the Civil War.
From December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863 the 8th fought in the Battle of Stone's River, Tennessee (Called the Battle of Murfreesboro by the Confederates). Over 76,000 soldiers fought in the battle with the North suffering 12,900 and the South over 11,700 casualties. A little over 1,400 were killed in the battle including Wiley Baker who died on January 2, 1863.

There is a Civil War Pension Card for Lucinda Baker, mother of Wiley Baker, who served in Co I, 8th KY Infantry. This alone proves he had no wife or children. Her application was dated 26 Nov 1874, #192031
