James died in the Civil War. Died while serving in the Confederate States Army-Posibly in the Battle of Seven Pines where 102 were killed, and 282 wounded out of about 650 engaged from Company G, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment. James A. Johnson is said buried at the Lexington Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lexington, GA.

Caver, Jr., page 18 & 19, THE AUTAUGA CITIZEN, issue of January 22, 1863"At a meeting of the Autauga Rifles, Company G, 6th Alabama Regiment, called for the purpose of giving expression to the feelings of the Company relative to the death of their gallant comrades, who have gone down upon the battlefields, and in the hospitals of Virginia and Maryland... The report of the committee, adopted without a voice of dissent, is as follows:
Whereas, the good God has, in the plenitude of his wisdom, seen proper to take from us some of our most valued officers, and many of our beloved comrades in arms, and whereas it is our highest duty, as it is our greatest pleasure, to pay their memories that respect which is so eminently their due; it is resolved, that while we mourn with deep sorrow the untimely loss of
