James Bean's land was sold at auction of July 1858 to his creditors Russel M. Kinnaird & Thomas. L. Bransford. Land was described as "...on a dry creek waters of Blackburn's Fork of Roaring River. First tract of 200 acres by survey bearing date 4 April 1831 ....crossing said creek ...near William Swearingin ...including James Bean's barn and mil and the place where said James Bean lived on 3 Aug 1831 and which tract was granted by the State of Tennessee to James Bruington, Grant No. 3297 and he transferred to James Bean. Second tract ...100 acres ...surveyed 2 Jun 1836 ...Blackburn's Fork adj. James Watson ...Garland Anderson ...including Aaron Bean's old sugar camp Grant No. 6739. James parents are unknown, he was sent to Jackson County, TN to live as a small boy. In 1828 he married Hollie Virginia, Jane, (Swearingen). They had 14-children born in TN and after a fire destroyed their home and killed their daughter Priscilla, they moved to Jackson County, AL where the last child, Margaret Angeline was born. The other children were: Nancy, Sarah Margaret, Mary Elizabeth, James Madison Jr., Eli Brantsford, Anderson Kelly, Allen Young, John Bender, two infants, Henry Harrison, and Eliza Jane Bean. James Sr. and family lived on the Big Coon Creek near Stevenson, Jackson County, AL. All of the surviving children were raised to adulthood here, and many of them married people from the same area. Jame's wife, Hollie along with other family members are buried at the "Old Haddon" Cemetery, along the Big Coon Creek with him.

James Madison Bean was born in Virginia in 1802, died 1866 in Jackson County, Alabama. He moved with his parents when he was 8 years old, to Jackson County, Tennessee, to the vicinity of Gainsboro. There he grew up and met and married Hollie Virginia Swearingen, who was born in 1806 in North Carolina and moved with her parents to Jackson County, Tennessee, also. They were married in 1828 in Gainsboro. She died in Jackson County, Alabama, in 1867. To them were born 8 girls and 7 boys, all of whom grew to adulthood and had families except Priscilla, who died in a terrible fire which destroyed the family home. The fire was in 1848 in Tennessee. Soon after this tragedy James and Hollie moved to Jackson County, Alabama, and lived there the rest of their lives.
All seven of the boys fought in the Confederate army and all returned; the eldest with one arm, and the fifth son with one leg. James Bean, Sr., died after the youngest son was released from Federal Prison; the family thought he was dead. He walked in one day in 1867 and the shock killed his mother. This affected that son, John Bender Bean, for the rest of his life.
Hollie Virginia Jane Swearingen was a descendant of Gerritt Van Swearingen of the old Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam (now New York).....
