Hannah was the daughter of John Simpson and Rebecca Weir.

Mother of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War Union General and 18th President of the United States. She married Jesse Root Grant on June 25, 1821 in Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio, and died of old age at her home on No. 582 Pavonia Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey. Considered to be distant and lacking in motherly affection towards her son Ulysses, she is seldom mentioned in his papers. She is buried near her husband.

Death of Gen. Grant's Mother
Hannah Grant, the widow of the late Jesse R. Grant and the mother of Gen. U. S. Grant, died very suddenly yesterday afternoon at her residence
....born in Doylestown, Bucks Co, Penn. Nov 23, 1799, and was one of five children of John Simpson. A sister and a brother, both older than she, are still living in Clairmount Co, Ohio.
....married to Mr. Grant near Bethel, Ohio, on Jun 24 1821 ....Gen. Grant was born on April 17, 1822. Mrs. Grant was the mother of six children, three sons and three daughters of whom only three, Gen. Grant, Mrs. Cramer and Mrs. Corbin, survive her. Mr. Grant died on June 30, 1873.
...body will be taken to Cincinnate where it will be buried ...beside the grave of her husband in the family plot, in Spring Grove Cemetery.
