An article which appeared in an 1892 Hill County (Texas) History about son Newton states that Newton was the son of James and Rebecca (Ratcliff) King. James had died in North Carolina in 1843 at the age of 56 years, and the mother died in Georgia, 1861, age 65. There were fifteen children:
Bettie, wife of Jonathan Coyins
Sarah, widow of Richard Cox
Johnson, deceased

Edmond, deceased
Kensey Turner, deceased
Caroline, wife of Drew (Drury) Weeks
Newton J.
Myra, wife of Andrew Calvord

James, deceased

Newton enlisted in the Mexican war in 1846 and served 18 months - he was a pensioner when the article was written. He returned home from Mexico, went to school one year, and in 1852 started for the gold fields in California. He took a ship to the Isthmus and was one of ten thousand waiting there for transportation. He was enganed as a miner about two years and secured enough money for a good start in life and in 1854 returned to Texas where he took up a claim of 160 acres in Bosque Co on the Brazos River which he had expanded to 370 acres in Bosque and Hill counties. He and his wife were then living in Whitney. Newton King also served in the Civil War in Company A, 1st Texas Heavy Artillery as a captain.
Newton married Miss Evaline V. Basye, 15 Nov 1855. She was the daughter of Isaac Basye and the eldest of ten children. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Newton was a Freemason. (No children mentioned)
