Individual Details
Joseph Harmon [Grayson, VA]
(Ca 1760 - Feb 1826)
Other databases place his birth as early as 1755. He was taxed in Grayson Co VA from 1798 thru 1810. In 1809 and 1810 there was a second male over age 21 listed. He is in the census there in 1820 and would seem to be the only Harmon in Grayson at that time. There is a Sally Harmon who died in 1818, Grayson Co VA, and some have assumed she was his mother.
Inventory of the estate of Sally Harmon was returned Sept 1818, Grayson Co VA
1820 Grayson Co VA:
Joseph Harmon: 1m under 10, 1m age 26-45, 1m over 45. 1f 26-45, 1f over 45.
Note that there appears to be a married child with a young son - perhaps the extra male on the tax lists from 1809 and 1810. This could be the daughter Mary with her out-of-wedlock child.
24 Jan 1826. Court held for Grayson Co VA on Tuesday.
On motion of William Evans who took the oath of an Administrator together with Joseph South and William Wilkinson his securities ordered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of $200 conditioned as the law directs a certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of Administration on the Estate of Joseph Harmon dec'd in due form. [sent by Richard Davis]
Note on Message Board states that his Inventory was returned in Feb of 1826, total $75.30 - Grayson WB 1, p.311. Appraisors said to be from Chestnut & Crooked Creek.

Mary Harman: 1m under 5, 1m 15-20. 1f 40-50, 1f 50-60 [could also be Joseph's widow]
Other children named are daughters Mary and Elizabeth, and a son Wilson with a birth date as 1813 and even as late as 1819. That would seem to suggest Wilson belonged to a later generation. He is said to be in the Grayson Co census in 1840 and served in the Civil War, 29th VA Regt. [from Soldiers & Sailors website] - I believe the Civil War service belongs to a younger Wilson.

I believe this is his family in 1850 because of the names of the children, in spite of the way the surname is spelled.

Wilson Harmon was a Private in the 29th Regt VA Infantry, CSA. Joseph Harmon and Patrick Harmon also served in this unit. This could be a nephew...
