Henry Harmon

(Abt 1790 - 1826)

Sureties to the marriage of Henry to Agnes Green were William Harmon and Thomas Green. William was quite likely to have been the eldest son of John L. Harmon. There is an unidentified male in the household of John L.in the 1810 Census that could be Henry, but no Henry nor his heirs was mentioned in a sale of land in 1837 that belonged to the estate of John L. Harmon which mentioned his other children. John L. Harmon did not leave a will, therefore all of his heirs would have to be listed in any estate transaction.

the 1806 tax record of Pulaski County shows one other taxable white male age 16-21 years and that would be John's son William who was born in 1788. However in the 1807 and 1808 tax record, John L. Harmon paid for two white males age 16-21, apparently his son William Harmon (b. 1788) and another unaccounted for son (b. c1790).

In the 1810 Pulaski Co KY tax list, a Thomas Green had 50 acres on Pitman Creek, the same location as the land of John L. Harmon. Thomas is believed to be the father of Agnes - his son Daniel is also in the tax records.

1810 Census. Pulaski Co, KY. John L. Harom would have been about 43. There are three males, 16-26 - William , b. 1788), and unaccounted for son, b. about 1790, and Richard, b. 1793. Two sons, 10-16, were John B., b. 1795 and James, b. 1797.

Taylor Crosby, grandson of Stephen Harmon had a Henry Harmon, born in Virginia, baptized by proxy in the LDS church in 1880. Taylor claimed to be a "nephew-in-law" of this Henry. He claimed this relationship to a known uncle, known grand-uncles, and even a great grand-uncle. What is notable is that, although he named a number of names from the New River Harmon families, including his grandfather Stephen & Stephen's brother Samuel, he named no William or John Harmon, effectively eliminating them from any connection to his family tree.

Henry and Agnes are believed to have gone to Indiana by 1813. Henry died in 1826, Marion Co. 6 Jul 1826, John Byrd Harmon and Robert Hanna were sureties on the estate of Henry Harmon, bond set at $600. Letters of administration were granted 6 Jul 1826 to Ranse B. Green, Agnes's brother. Final settlement was dated 15 Aug 1833.

Agnes has not been found in the 1830 census. In 1840, she appears to be in Lawrence Township, Marion Co. She was age 50-60 and had 4 females in the household, two age 15-20 and two age 20-30, along with nine free blacks. Her brother Rans Bird Green is said to been active in the underground railroad - possibly Agnes was also involved.

A William Harmon died in Boone Co - I have dates of death for the other William's that are quite different. This might be the William Harmon who married Elizabeth Shawnesee in Boone Co, 28 Jul 1840. He may have been the son of Henry Harmon and Agnes Green.
