Charlemagne Charles the Great

(2 Apr 741 - 28 Jan 813/4)

There are 30 generations from my "gateway" ancestor, Agnes Harris, to Charlemagne and 30 generations from my husband's gateway ancestor, William Clopton, to Charlemagne.

Charlemagne was King of the Franks from 768 and Emperor of the Roman from 800 until his death in 814. He expended the Frankish kingdom to an empire that included much of Western and Central Europe. He conquered Italy and was crowned Emperor Augustus by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day, 800.

He was the son of King Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon, a Frankish Queen.
Pepin the Short ruled from 752 to 768 - the crown descended to two of his sons, Carloman I and Charlemage. They ruled jointly from 768 to 771.

Charlemagne was part of the Carolingian Dynasty which ruled France from 752 to 987. There of the twelve kings during the dynasty were actually from the rival Robertian Dynasty which became the Capetian Dynasty when Hugh Capet ascended the throne in 987.
