The Ancestry of Abraham Lincoln, contains a letter written from Harrisonburg VA, 15 Sep 1908, to the authors of this book. The letter signed by Charles Griffin Herring.
He at first explained that all the family records and documents had been burned by Gen. Sheridan's troops in June of 1862. All the older family members are dead but he often heard the family history discussed.
He believed the first immigrant to be John Herring who ran away to sea at age 9 and came to Virginia [doubtful!]. John eventually had possession of a grant in the Shenandoah Valley and built a fort at Heronford, where a Thomas Herring still lived. Four of John's sons said to served in the Revolution under LightHorse Harry Lee.
Bathsheba Herring was a daughter of Leonard Herring, born on the plantation near Bridgewater in Rockingham Co VA. Her mother was a "Scotch" Presbyterian - the name of her family forgotten.
CGH went on to discuss possible "famous" connections in England.
He said, "Abraham Lincoln, who married Bathsheba Herring, was a poor and rather plain man. Her aristocratic father looked with scorn on the alliance, and gave his daughter the choice of giving up her lover or being disinherited." He states that after Lincoln was killed by Indians, one of the sons, a lad of twelve, had killed the Indian and avenged his father's death.
He regretted that he was "unable to give more extended and accurate information"
