WILLIAM BUELL
(Abt 1620 - 23 Nov 1681)
William Buell's parents are unproven. May be Sir Robert Buell who married Catherine Goode according to Stephen Beckler on his web page. Other versions link William to Robert Bevill who married Mary Coles. I don't see how "Bevill" can become "Buell" in a single generation and would be inclined to choose the former. [another possible explanation for the confusion in surnames is the similarity of the letters “u” and “v” in the old handwriting]
Milliken's "History of Ontario County" says William Buell sailed from Plymouth, England, on Mar 31, 1630 in the "Mary and John" and landed at Nantasket, Boston Bay, on May 30. [There are several published lists of passengers of the "Mary and John", none proved but he isn't there anyway, so this statement is doubtful.] He settled at Dorchester, MA and 5 years later moved to the new settlement at Windsor.
Asselia Lichliter wrote SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS OF THE BEVILLE FAMILY For the past sixteen years I have used various researchers in England to find the parents of our William but to no avail. It is certain that he is not the son of Sir Robert Beville as some have claimed. I have a copy of the probated will of William Beville, son of Sir Robert Beville, probated 1638. That William was one of two sons and was born in 1610. Signed Nathan Deloss Buell, Compiler."

'A Genealogical Register of the Inhabitants of the Town of Litchfield,Conn.' by George C. Woodruff in 1845, mentions that William was born in Chesterton, Huntingdonshire, England, about 1610; supposed to have left England in the company under the charge of Rev. Mr. Warham in 1630. He settled in Dorchester, Mass. He removed to Windsor, Conn., in the fall of1635 or spring of 1636, where he died Nov. 23, 1681. He married Mary ---Nov. 18, 1640; she died Sept. 1, 1684.' It mentions their children.
Frequently seen in trees on the Intenet is a birth of 17 Feb 1605 in Chestertown - I feel sure this is not likely this man. There seems to be no source provided for this claim.

WILLIAM BUELL, THE IMMIGRANT, AND WIFE MARY: Excerpts from Article: "William Buell & Early Descendants," by George W. McCracken, Pages 64 - 71 (The American Genealogist, Vol. 54, No. 2, April, 1978)
WILLIAM BUELL, a joiner, came to America accompanied by a woman whose death on 3 Dec 1639 in Windsor, Conn. was recorded by the town clerk as that of "Goode Buell." She has generally been assumed to have been the mother of William, but she could have been his first wife. The word "Goode" is merely an appellative designed to show that she was not of gentle birth McCracken discusses how Albert Welles attemped to identify her as Catherine, daughter of Sir John Goode and widiow of Sir Robert Beville of Chesterton [Huntingdonshirfe]. "I think it so improbable that William Buell, a joiner, could have been an unrecorded son of such a pair that ..... there does seem to be a son William in a Visitation pedigree, but when the same person was baptized in 1606 his name was entered as Richardus."
Although many of the founding settlers of Windsor, Conn. came from Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, nothing can be found about the Buell family before their arrival in Windsor. William Buell married, perhaps at Windsor where the marriage is recorded, 18 Nov 1640, a woman whose name is not identified in this record. We know from other sources that her first name was Mary, but we have not found her maiden surname. Although there is a claim that it wss either a Thomas or a Post, no evidence for these names or any other possible name has been discovered.
On 1 Dec 1640, William Buell was granted a five-acre home lot at Windsor, bounded south by William Thrall. About this same year, William Buell and William Filley bought of William Thrall two tracts, of eight and 36 acres, respectively. On 29 March 1652, William Buell was paid for work done on the seats in the Windsor meeting house. Subsequently he completed other assignments for improvements to that building..
In June 1676, at the time of King Philip's Ward, William Buell contributed for the war sufferers.
In anticipation of death, William Buell conveyed , on 31 Oct 1681, the Thrall lands to his son Samuel, but Samuel was not to sell during the lifetime of his mother.
According to the Windsor Vital Records, William died on 23 Nov 1681 at night, but the inventory of his estate his death was on 16 Nov 1681. Frank Farnworth Starr preferred to accept the latter date. His will was dated 26 July 1681. [See data below for a coyy of the will and of the inventory.]
According to the inventory of her estate, the widow Mary Buell died on 1 Sept 1684, but the Windsor Vital Records say that she died on the day following. She left an unsigned will dated 29 Aug 1684, probated 24 March 1684/5.
The children, all of whom were born in Windsor:
i. SAMUEL, b. 2 Sep 1641; d. Killingworth,11 July 1720.
ii. MARY, b . 3 Sep 1643, d. 26 June 1718.
