Colonel James G. Bourland is Benjamin Bourland's son. They came to Texas about 1836 to Fannin County. James was with Tarrant, Cooke and Colonel Young at the Battle of Village Creek near Arlington in 1841. That is where his Lieutenant, John Denton, was killed while scouting the Indians. He later served in the Legislature and was instrumental in naming the counties for his buddies. He had a huge spread on the Red River in Cooke County
