Individual Details
Nancy Easterling
(1 Apr 1841 - 2 Jan 1929)
Nancy may have been born in 1840 - in that census there were two little girls under age 5.
Nancy's marriage was recorded as Mary Easterling to John Jefferson Traywick on FamilySearch.org, but no image is available.
Nancy Trawick, widow of J. J. Trawick filed for his Civil War pension - his service given as Private, 28th Alabama. She was denied, letter dated 3 Jan 1914, as he was not found on the rolls of that company. [John Jefferson was in the 58th, not the 28th....] She appeared on the 23 of Jan with the parole of her husband. She gave the exact date of her married as Dec 26, 1860. Her age was 74 years, 8 months, 8 days. Elijah Robinson Sr swore to her statement on 8 Jan 1916. Nancy filed a financial statement showing she owned one bed worth $10. Nancy signed with her X and it's obvious she didn't understand what she was signed - in one place his date of death is said to be 15 Mar 1862 - but that would have been his date of enlistment. On 16 Sep 1907, Nathan Mims (also signing with X) stated he knew she was the widow of J. J. Traywick and had not remarried - so she had started the application process several years earlier. She must have been approved because a paper dated 26 Apr 1915 requests to be placed on the reclassified pension roll and gave her number as 10232. This time she gives his date of death as Sept 1901. Nancy said he enlisted at Montgomery in 1861 and was discharged at the close of the war - she didn't remember any officers, units, etc. On 30 Nov 1920, she stated she owned furniture worth about $25. She was assessed 0 by the county assessor.
There is a very worn paper, letterhead of the Office Examining Board, Medical College & Fair Ground Hospitals, dated 15 Sep 1863, Atlanta, GA, granting a 40 day Furlough to J. J. Trawick, Private, to visit Chesnut Creek, Alabama. He was in Co. K, 9th Batt, AL Volunters, Bates Brigade. Quartermaster to furnish transportation to Montgomery, Alabama.
His promise to never bear arms is signed May 26, 1865. J. J. Traywick, Prvt, Co K, 58th AL Infy. Signed with his X. He was 5'8" tall, brown hair, dark eyes.
