Died at Christian College, Columbia, Mo., on the morning of the 26th of March, 1885, Mrs. Rebecca Bruton, in the 72nd year of her age.
Her illness was very brief, for she was confined to her bed from pneumonia, only a few days. She was born in Clarke Co., Ky., April 25, 1813 and was married to David Bruton, September 23, 1828, who preceded her to the Better Land about thirteen years ago. Soon after their marriage, they became members of the Christian Church. For more than fifty years, Sister Bruton had been a faithful and devoted Disciple of Christ.
She came with her husband to Boone Co., Mo., in 1852, which has been her home ever since. To them were born fifteen children, nine of whom are still living.
Sister Bruton had recently returned from a visit to her children in California and had just completed her round of visits to her children and relatives in this state and seemed to be ready for the change that came. She was certainly ready so far as the faith and hope of her heart were concerned. She went to sleep as a weary child at the close of day.
At the time of her death, she was visiting her son-in-law, W. P. Hurt and his children at Christian College. Her many friends and acquaintances had gladly welcomed her back among them and were preparing to make her visit a happy one, but she was taken to a better company and has found a home among the Saints in light.
Her remains were taken to Red Top Church, in Boone Co., where they were placed by the side of her husband and children to rest until the resurrection morning. In the presence of a large number of her relatives, neighbors and friends, the writer preached her funeral discourse. She had gone beyond her three score years and ten and filled up the years of her long useful life, with a fond mothers energy, industry, patience and hope. She rests from her labors and her works do follow her. The tears of true affection were shed over her cold form and her grave by her devoted children that were present at her burial, while those far away in a distant state, mingle with their grief the deep regret that they could not be present to share in the common sorrow. But the memory of her virtues and the constancy of her motherly love will ever be the solace of their stricken hearts while they wait in faith, the dawn of the day, when God shall wipe all tears away.
