Socrates "Soc" Haden

Socrates and his wife were second cousins once removed. Their common ancestors were John & Jean [Moseley] Haden.

Served in the 1st Virginia Cavalry, first commanded by Col. (later Gen.) J. E. B. Stuart along with his cousin Benjamin James Haden during the Civil War.
Service Record on Fold3.com reveals the following. He enlisted 1 Oct 1861 at Camp Longstreet under command of William Patrick for 1 year. Company E, 1st Regt, VA Cavalry.
On 1 Dec 1861 he was discharged on Surgeon's certificate of disability. The Certificate is included and states that Socrates Haden was born in Fluvanna Co VA, was age 26, 5 feet 10 inches tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair. By occupation, a farmer. He is entitled to discharge by reason of disability but doesn't explain further. Had received no pay since his enlistment; rate was $24 per month for self and horse. Receipt for $73 in full signed by Socrates Haden.
20 Aug 1863, he again enlisted in the same Company E at Fredricksburg, under command of Capt. McClung, for the duration of the war. He had no horse in service at that time. He was present in Sep & Oct, Nov & Dec, Jan & Feb of 1864, Mar & Apr. On the card for May & June, it is noted that on 9 May 1864, he was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House; horse in service for 39 days.

There is a card that says S. Haden, Pvt, Co. E, 1 VA Ca is on a roll of prisoners belonging to the Provisional Army of the Confederate States of America, paroled at Columbia, VA, by Maj. Henry Terwilliger, 1st Regt NY Mounted Rifles, Provost Marshal. There is no date, but a note at the bottom of the card states that Terwilliger was detailed as Provost Marshal and Paroling Officer on 1 May 1865, returning to his command on 1 Jun 1854.

Virginia Obituary
Charlottesville, April 3. Socrates Haden, aged 84, Confederate veteran and brother of mayor E. G. Haden, of this city, died today at Concord. A wound received 56 years ago was the immediate cause of the demise of the veteran, blood poisoning having set in a few weeks ago which resulted in a partial amputation of the limb. His wife and four children survive.
