(Ca 1610 - 9 Jul 1660)

From The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Volumes I-III, Available online at NewEnglandAncestors.org with membership in NEHGS.

Edward Dix migrated probably to Boston circa 1630. He removed to Watertown by 1634. He was admitted to Boston church as member #49 as Edward "Deekes".
Delared a freeman in Watertown, 4 Mar 1634/5 as the fifth in a group of six men.
Dix signed documents with his mark, although his inventory included a Bible and three old books.
Watertown selectman, 10 Dec 1649.

Edward Dix had the following proprietorial lots in Watertown:
homestall of 11 acres
1 acres of meadow
3 acres of upland
30 acres in the Great Dividend
3 acres Beaverbrook Plowlands
3 acres Remote Meadows
10 and 1/2 acres upland
105 acre farm

The first wife is often cited as Jane Wilkinson, but I've seen no proof of her surname. His second wife was Susanna.

Edward Dix Will was dated 25 Jun 1660, proved 2 Oct 1660. Made out as Edward "Dikes" of Wattertowne. He stated he received estate of his wife [a second wife] of 20£ which was to be paid to her along with another 5£. She received a life estate with his children in his dwelling house. He described his estate as "all my estate viz: houses, lands both near and remote with two hundred acres of land bought of Ensign Sherman". Son John "Dikes" to enjoy a double portion with addition of 10£ and a mare colt running in the woods. The rest to be equally divided among his three daughters only the youngest to have some extra consideration. Daughter [Elizabeth, crossed out - there was no daughter named Elizabeth] Abigaell, wife to Thomas Parks to be made equal to the rest of her sisters. Son John "Diks" to be sole executor.
John was not of age and on 2 Oct 1660 [the day the will was proved], he selected Sgt. John Wincoll as his guardian.

The inventory fo the estate of Edward "Dickes" was taken 8 Oct 1660 and totalled just over 254£ of which 103£ was real estate:
dwelling house and barn and 14 acres of homestall land
3 acres of meadow in Beaver Brook Meadow
5 acres at Slendergut Meadow
6 acres of meadow at Mr. Saltonstall's farm
5 acres of Remote Meadow
20 acres of dividend by Thomas Torball's and 10 acres by Richard Sawtel's
6 acres of land by John Barnard's
9 acres of land by Rich. Sawtel's
3 acres in the furthen plain
18 acres in lieu of the township
200 acres at Esabeth [Assabet] River
his right in farm land in Wattertown

2 Apr 1661. Susanna Dickes, widow, brought suit against Sgt. John Wincoll and John Dix, executors of Edward Dix, for her dowry.

Edward's first wife was Jane - no surname proved. She was listed as the mother of all the children in their birth records. She died sometime after the birth of the youngest child, Rebecca. There is no marriage record to the second wife Susanna and her surname is also unknown.

Children:
Abigail, b. 2 May 1637. Married at Cambridge, 1 Dec 1653, Thomas Parks.
Mary, b. 2 May 1639. Married at Watertown, 5 Feb 1662/3 Abraham Brown. Married (2) Samuel Rice
John, b. 4 Sep 1640. Married at Watertown, 7 Jan 1670/1 Elizabeth Barnard
Rebecca, b. 18 Feb 1641/2. Married at Watertown, 18 Feb 1667/8 Thomas Flagg

On the passenger list of the Thomas & John, London to Virginia, are Edward Dix, 19, and Jane Wilkinson, age 20, at different positions in the list. They have been identified as this Edward and his first wife. However, this ship was sailing to Virginia, not New England, Edward Dix of Watertown had been admitted to freeman prior to the sailing of this ship, nor was the Edward Dix, age 19, of age to be a freeman.
A child Deborah has been added by some as there was a widow Deborah Dix of Watertown who moved who moved to Wethersfield, CT at an early date. There is also a marriage of a Deborah Dix who married Richard Barnes of Marlborough, MA. However there are no records to support this daughter - the births of Abigail, Mary & Rebecca are all recorded in the Watertown Vital Records and the will of Edward Dix specifies three daughters. If Deborah was of any relation, she wasn't likely a daughter.
