Tobias Makin

( - Bet 14 May 1610 and 10 Sep 1610)

From The American Genealogist, Vol. 61, #2, July 1985
"Was Tobias Makin an Ancestor of the New England Shermans?" by Myrtle Stevens Hyde & Douglas Richardson, M.A.

Tobias wrote his will 14 May 1610 and it was proved 10 Sep 1610. He named his wife Katherine; sons John the elder who was the eldest son, John the younger, Thomas, the youngest son, Samuel, Westbroome, Robert, and Tobias; daughters Grace Sherman, Joane and Rebecca (neither with surnames), grandchild Elizabeth Potter and to each of the following, probably also grandchildren, Richard Sherman son of Edmund Sherman, Richard Weald son of Richard Weald of Kyrbie, Thomas Weald son of Thomas, dec'd; and a kinsman John Weald, son of John Weald the younger; Mary Payne, Bridget Bury. Thomas Witing to be supervisor.

An anonymous contributor to the NEHGS Register suggested that Grace Sherman had married successively John Sherman, bapt in Dedham, 17 Aug 1585, buried Great Horkesley, 24 Jan 1615-6, Thomas Rogers, and Roger Port. That Grace Porter had died in Watertown, MA on 3 Jun 1662 age 70. The same article stated that Tobias Makin's daughter Joan was the of Edmund Sherman who had died in New Haven CT in 1641 and still living in 1643 when named in the will of her brother-in-law, Samuel Sherman. The author of the article then quoted the baptismal record of Edmund Sherman's son Richard as Richard was the son of "Edmund and Jone Sherman".
[My note: many of Edmund's children were baptized at Dedham and apparently only Richard's had his mother as Joan. This wouldn't be the first time a minister recorded a wrong name, if he meant Joan's sister Grace.]

Samuel Makin, likely the son of Tobias named in the will above, in his own will, surrendered land in Fingringhoe to John Wall, who had married Deborah Sherman, a niece of Edmund who died in New Haven in 1641.

The article then goes on to dispute any possibility that Tobias Makin's daughter Grace was the wife of John Sherman, Thomas Rogers & Roger Porter. The widow of Edmund Sherman was still living as the widow Sherman, when the suggested subsequent marriages took place. Tobias Makin's daughter Joan certainly was not the wife of Edmund Sherman because she married Richard Stone and was likely too young to have been the mother of the baptized Richard Sherman.
[My note: in the will of Tobias Makin, in 1610, it would appear that his daughters Joan and Rebecca were not yet married and Richard Sherman had been baptized in 1608.]
