ARIE Vance

(15 Feb 1901 - 4 Sep 1973)

Arie Vance's birth date and death date are in the Social Security Death Index, as well as on his grave stone, Ledbetter Cemetery. Sadie is also said to be buried there but the information is not available on FindAGrave.com where I found his record.

During the Depression, Arie must have moved to the city to find work:
1930 Census. Hamtramck City, Wayne Co Michigan
2706 Geimer Avenue, Household 57
Vance, Arie, renting his home, age 29, married at 27, born KY as were his parents, Assembler, Auto Factory
Vance, Saddie, wife, age 21, married at 19, born KY as were her parents. Not employed
Garrison, Toy, Bro in Law, age 22, married at 21, born KY as were his parents. Assembler, Auto Factory.
Garrison, Irene, Sis in Law, age 17, married at 16, born KY as were her parents. Not employed
Dowdy, Pearl, Sis in Law, age 28, single, b. KY as were her parents, Inspector, Spring Factory

1940 Census. Calloway Co KY, Libery Magisterial Dist 90, Hh 66,
Renting - lived in same place in 1935
Arie Vance, 39, b. KY, finished 7th grade,Farmer
Sadie, wife, 31, finished 8th grade
Buddie, son, 7
Arie, son, 5
Rupert Shekels, 33, b. KY, finished 2nd grade,Laborer

The above census indicates that Arie married Sadie about 1818. He apparently had an earlier marriage. Said to be buried at Ledbetter Cemetery where Arie is buried is also the following grave.
Wife of A. Vance
Euple Ahart Vance
b. Jun 6 1905 d. Aug 6 1925
A Vance researcher, descendant of Oma Vance Williams, also records this marriage - he did not mention the infant below. I have estimated a marriage date as possibly 1923 when she would have been eighteen.
Actually a stone picture on FindAGrave for Sadie shows she is buried Henry Cemetery, Corinth, Alcorn Co, KY

Found in the Kentucky Death Index online.
[Arie] Vance, under 1 year of age, died 4 Aug 1925.
It would seem quite likely that this was their child and both child and mother may have died from complications of childbirth.
I ordered the Death Certificates. The baby was an un-named male child, stillborn on 4 Aug 1925. His cause of death was listed as eclampsia of mother. Her name is given as Euple Ahort. Arie Vance was the informant and the child was buried Ledbetter Cemetery.

The Kentucky Death Index has her name as Eifie Ahort and the date as the same as the baby's date of death - August 4th. The Ledbetter cemetery information gives a date of death as August 6th.

There is also a discrepancy in the birth date of Euple. It is Apr 10, 1905 on her death certificate instead of Jun 6 as reported from Ledbetter Cemetery, and it also shows the date of death as 4 Aug 1925 and gives the cause as Eclampsia [complication of childbirth]. Strangely enought the death certificate says that the doctor last saw her alive on the 6th of August - yet it was signed on the 4th of August.. He gave the duration of her illness as three days. The burial date is given as August 5th. Her death certificate shows her as married but then gives her name as Euple S. Ahort, disregarding her husband's surname. Arie Vance was listed as the father and the informant for the birth certificate of her stillborn son. The doctor, L. D. Hall, was the informant for the death certificate of Euple. Euple's father's name was given as Ed Ahort, the mother as Euple O. Ahort. I have no doubt the doctor was a little hasty and perhaps made several errors.

The search for Euple Ahart Vance. The 1920 Calloway Co Census for Liberty has the following:
Edd Ahart, head of household, age 40, born in Kentucky as were his parents.
Wife, Alpha, age 36, also born in KY as were her parents.
?Aubie L., son, age 18
Ouple B., daughter, age 14
Troy, son, age 12
The family was indexed as "Abert". They had the 14-year-old daughter as "Verle B."
Alpha S. Ahart is in the Kentucky death index. She died 8 Mar 1962 at age 79.

In 1930, Liberty, Calloway Co:
Edd Ahart, age 50, married at age 19. Alpha, wife, age 47, married at age 16. No children at home.
This census reveals that the older son was perhaps Autrie L. In the household of James W. Williams and wife Margaret is:
Plum F. Ahart, dau, age 27, married at age 18.
L. Autrie Ahart, son-in-law, age 28, married at 19.
Earnestine, grand-daughter, age 8. Edwin, grandson, age 6. Ardith, grand-daughter, age 2 and 4/12.

With additional family names, I was able to find the family earlier in 1910 in Trigg Co, Kentucky, Magisterial District 1. This census is very faded but I could read the following:
Household 63
Edd Ahart, age 30, married for 11 years, born Kentucky as were his parents.
Alpha, age 27, had 4 children, 3 are living, born Kentucky as were her parents.
Aubrey, son, age 8.
Euple, daughter, age 4
Troy, son, age 2

Then in 1928, Arie married Sadie Dowdy. I have found no dates for either marriage but likely they are recorded at the Calloway Co Courthouse.
