Mildred Pamelia Smith

(16 Oct 1809 - Oct 1870)

Millard Pamelia Smith married Stephen M. Hale about 1826. Her father Stephen Hail gave consent. She stated she had neither parents or guardian and requested license be issued. Bennet Hail was security.

In Pike Twp, Marion Co IN, 1840 Stephen Hale has the following household:
1m under 5 [Washington], 1m 10-15 [William], 1m age 30-40 [Stephen].
2f under 5 [one would be Nancy, the other unknown], 1f 5-10 [Mary], 1f 10-15 [possibly Melissa, see later], 1f 30-40 [Pamelia], and a female age 70-80.

I did find a Stephen M. Hail in Pulaski Co KY in 1830. He was age 20-30. A female of the same age was present. No children. There was another Stephen Hail, the same age with a younger wife and a young girl. Also a Stephen Hail Sr and several other Hail families.
The only Stephen Hail still in Pulaski in 1840:
2m 5-10, 1m 30-40. 1f 5-10. 1f 20-30, 1f 40-50.
By 1850, the Stephen Hail in Pulaski was age 45 with a wife named Sarah - obviously not the same man. Another Stephen A. Hail was listed as a single man, age 48, a stonemason born in Virginia. They may be relatives but are not either this Stephen or his father who had both left Kentucky.

I did find this Stephen M. Hale in the 1850 census in Platte Co MO. He was age 40, born in Kentucky. His wife was Amelia [obviously the enumerator misunderstood her name - did she go by Milly?] - she was age 41, born in Kentucky. They had a son William, age 19, born in Ohio. These children born in Indiana: Mary 14, Washington 12, Nancy 10. These children born in Missouri: John 8, Stephen 5, Charles 7 months. This man is a brother to Nancy Hale below.

There is another relationship to Platte Co MO. Henry Taylor who was a nephew of Millard Smith - he was the child of her sister Nancy Smith and Henry Taylor, both of whom died quite young, and he was raised by his uncle William Smith. Young Henry is said to have married Nancy Jane Carr, 3 Apr 1840, Boone Co IN. Apparently this marriage did not work out and he went to Missouri where he married a Nancy Hale, 21 Jul 1844 - in Platte Co. The family story is that Nancy Hale was the youngest of ten children of Stephen & Nancy Hale, born 2 Mar 1827. They are said to have moved to Missouri when young Nancy was 12, or about 1839/1840. It is said her mother died when she was 15, or about 1843 and she had to care for her father and three grown brothers. Nancy's father Stephen Hale is buried next to her mother in Macon Co MO. In 1848, Nancy & Henry Taylor returned to Boone Co IN where they appear in the 1850 census next door to William Smith.

1860 Census. Center, Atchison Co , Kansas Territory
M. "Hall", age 50 b. KY. Permelia, age 50, b. KY
John M. age 17, Stephen E. 15, Charles H. 10 and Benjamin F. age 8 - all born in Missouri.
Even though there is no first name Stephen and the last name is wrong, the sons make it obvious that this is the correct family.

1870 Census. Center, Atchison Co, Kansas
Stephen Hale, age 60, b. KY. Pamelia, age 60, b. KY
John M. 24, b. MO, Benjamin 17, b. MO
In the same household but marked as a different family:
Melissa Dyer age 38, b. KY. Mary E. 21, b. MO, Arabella/Anabella, 15, b. MO, Amanda age 11, b. Kansas, John M. age 3 b. MO.

Curious about Melissa, I looked back in Weston Twp., Platte Co MO in 1850 and found the Dyer family. James Dyer, age 33, b. TN. Melissa, 18, b. TN. Eliza age 2 and Ann E. age 6 months. I was unable to find them in 1860 in Missouri or Kansas.

Although descendant Neil Reed gave me a date of death for Mildred, her youngest son's obituary stated she died in 1878.
