Peter graduated from Harvard in 1845 and studied in Heidelberg and Berlin. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1857. He was a member of the New York State Assembly 1861-1862. He was appointed Colonel of the 129th NYSV on 7 Jul 1862 which was converted to the 8th NY Heavy Artillery and called up for Grant's 1864 campaign. He was killed 3 Jun 1864, leading the charge at Cold Harbor, VA.
