James Meness entered service in the Revolution and fought at the battle of Guilford Courthouse on 15 Mar 1781.
Believed to have left Henry Co VA for Tennessee in the fall of 1783.

#10882 14 Feb 1785 Warrant 611, Location 638. Jas. McNees assignee of Wm Holderness & Jas Perkins, 640 acres on N side of Cumberland River; border; begins about 1.5 miles above mouth of Stone R, up and down the river; W as the law direct includes a spring and tree marked BMN. Transferred to William Whitsell [Whitsett] by me 7 Dec 1792. Signed: Jas. McNees. [Vol. 6, p.1090]
[I don't know how this warrant could have been in the hands of William Holderness but this is no doubt the land settled by William Whitsitt near Nashville. James McNees was Whitsitt's brother-in-law.]

16 Nov 1790 State of North Carolina #298. To James Menees pursuant to an act for relief of the officers and soldiers of the Continental line and in consideration of the services of James Menees, one of the Commissioners Guards. Grant of 320 acres, Davidson Co on the west side of Mill Creek. Surveyed for Menees on 9 Jun 1788. Warrant #418.
This land was eventually presented to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Samuel Ham.

17 Nov 1790 State of North Carolina #298 For the sum of 10£ for every hundred acres, James Menees is granted a tract of 640 acres in Davidson Co [now Tennessee] on the west side of Mill Creek. Begin on Thomas Hardiman's south boundary line, etc. Surveyed for Menees on 9 Jun 1788. Warrant #78, located 12 Jan 1784.

Logan County KY Deed - 5 Nov 1796 James Menees of Davidson County TN sold 172 acres on the south side of the Red River to Sanford Gorham for 100 #'s. Wit: Silas McBee, Abraham Standley, Joshua Cates, John Baker.

Will was made on 3 Sep 1833; recorded on 6 Nov 1837. Executors: James Whitsitt, Samuel Whitsitt, John Menees, J. R. Dabbs, and James Thomas. His land was to be sold and the money divided in eight equal parts. Children named as Elender Cochran, dec'd but with heirs, Nancy McFarland, one 8th except for money given to two grandchildren, Elizabeth & James Davis [Nancy's children by an earlier marriage?], Margaret Wray to divide her 8th between herself and her three children, heirs of daughter Susan Stanley, John Menees, Mary Wray, heirs of daughter Elizabeth Ham [granddaughter Mildred Ni?? to be charged with $75 of her part and Stephen Ham with $95 of his part, and to daughter Jane Whitsitt being chargable with what her husband owes me.
