Will of John Hines. 2 Aug 1849
To beloved wife Sarah during her natural life or as long as she choose to occupty the houses and farm land on Gasper River not to include the saw & grist mills. If she choose elsewhere she may have the sum of $2000 immediately after my decease. Also any of my slaves which she may select to render her service and comfort. If she chooses the $2000, at her death any remaining to return to my general estate.
Land purchased by myself & Phineas D. Hampton of Col. William Marshall inlcuding the Mill (all of which now belongs to me) to be sold. Also my wife to have livestock, household & kitchen furniture and farming utensils as she select. Remainder of my land, slaves (except a Negro girl named Ellen) and all other property to be sold and proceeds after deducting debts, etc. to be equally divided into seven equal parts. One 7th to be divided among the living children of my daughter Polly Collins. One 7th to my son Pleasant Hines. One 7th to the living children of my daughter Nancy Adams. One 7th to the living children of my son James D. Hines. One 7th to the living children of my daughter Sarah Burnum. One 7th to the living children of my daughter Caroline Hampton. One 7th to my daughter Eliza Jane Loving including a Negro girl Ellen now in her possession at the price of $400. If my two granddaughter, children of Caroline Hampton whould die without issue, any part of my estate paid to them shall retrun to my Executors and be distributed. Any estate left to my wife after her death to be distributed as above. To Catharine Shamer - $400 (no relationship stated). Pleasant Hines and John Burnam to be Executors - if either or both die, then Philip N. Loving to be Executor.

Codicil: Executors to use discretion in that part of my estate devided to grandchildren whose parent is not living, and to discend to others whose parents may die before my decease to secure the same benefit.
