Ann H. "Nancy" Haden

(27 Sep 1817 - 11 Apr 1904)

I believe this Ann is most likely the Nancy Haden who married Joshua H. Spencer in Logan Co on 8 Jan 1834. Joshua was the son of David Spencer, a friend and acquaintance of the Haden families. Records re this connection are listed below:

There are two Spencer Cemeteries in Logan Co. This one near Auburn [Gasper River & where the Hadens lived]
Spencer, David 4 Jul 1772 - 8 Mar 1835
Spencer, Elizabeth 9 Mar 1776 - 10 Jun 1863 [wife of David]
Hightower, Joshua 15 Apr 1818 - 24 Nov 1864
Hightower, Josuah 4 Feb 1780 - 27 Apr 1876
Hightower, Anne 3 Jan 1799 - 26 Jul 1884, nee Nancy Anne Spencer

David Spencer listed in Logan Co 1830 Census as age 50-60, and in household 1m 15-20, 1m 30-40, 1f 60-70. [He wasn't there in 1820]
The 1830 Tax list has David with 8 slaves, 6 horses, 2 tracts of land - one of 155, one of 144 acres, both on the Gasper River. The Hadens, Mortons, etc. lived on the Black Lick Fork of the Gasper.

1840 Census - Simpson Co KY has Joshua Spencer. Age 20-30 with a female of the same age. Two boys - one under 5, one 5-10. Next door was Hezekiah Proctor who was the same age & had a wife the same age, also two small boys. He was the son of John Proctor & Betsy Furbush of Logan Co, and he had married Catherine M. Spencer Morton in 1836 after the death of her first husband, John Morton. [Thomas J. Spencer is indexed as still being in Logan Co in 1840]

1850 Census - Simpson Co
J. H. Spencer, M, age 36, farmer, A. H. Spencer, F, age 27 [she fudged a bit on her age...]; S. H. Spencer, M, age 14, D. Spencer, M, age 12, M. F. Spencer, F, age 8, J. H. Spencer, M, age 4, R. H., M, age 1. And N. Bibb, a Black man age 36, no doubt a farm hand. All born in Kentucky.
[The names of these children are believed to be Samuel H. Spencer, David Spencer, Mary F. Spencer, Joshua H. Spencer Jr, and Robert H. Spencer.]
Living with Hezekiah Proctor in Simpson Co in 1850 was his mother-in-law E. C. Spencer, age 73, born in VA. Catherine Spencer Proctor's age is 35, b. KY.

Then in 1860 in Simpson Co, of all things. Samuel H. Spencer, age 25, and his family are living next door to William Haden Jr. Now this particular William Haden is a bit of a puzzle himself, but I do suspect he is the oldest son of Samuel H. Haden. I believe he was called "Jr" because his uncle William Haden was at that time living in Simpson Co next door to his father Samuel.
I didn't find Elizabeth Spencer still living with Hezekiah Proctor, but a sister of Catherine, Elizabeth Bowman, age 61, born in VA was living with them, along with a Robert age 37, no doubt her son with a margin note "predisposed to idiocy".
Anyway Samuel H. Spencer of 1860 lived with Mary E. age 24, Nancy A. 3, Benjamin 2, and Robt. 3/12.

1870 Census. London, Prec 2, Butler Co, KY, Hh 174
Samuel Spencer, 35, b. KY as was everyone in the family, farmer
Mary, 33, Keeping house
Ann H., age 53, Sewing
Nancy A. 13. Benjamin W. 12. Mary 10. Martha, age 2.

1880 Census. Samuel Spencer, age 45, is in Warren Co KY. Mary E. his wife. His mother, Nancy A. Spencer, age 63 is living with him. Son Benjamin is there, now age 21, and a daughter Mattie F. age 12. Owen Bennett, a nephew age 2, is living there as is a cousin, James Haden, age 18 [that I can't identify].

1900 Census. Stallard Springs, Warren Co KY, Hh 135
Samuel H. Spencer, born Nov 1834, age 65, widowed, b. KY, farmer
Annie H., mother, b. Sep 1817, age 82, widowed, had 7 children - 5 are living, b. KY
Sallie E. Owen, housekeeper, b. Nov 1870, age 29, b. KY
William Haden, cousin, b. Nov 1849, age 50, widowed, b. KY, his mother B. MO, carpenter.
[this would have been the son of Tyree Haden]

I have been reading your work on the web. Joshua and Nancy Haden Spencer are my G G G grandparents.
When visiting the Wand Cemetery in Warren County Kentucky, I found a stone for Nancy H. (or E.) Spencer, wife of J. H. Spencer. Born Sept. 27, 1817 and died April 11, 1904. This cemetery is not far from a cemetery where her son, David Spencer and his wife are buried. Both cemeteries, especially the Wand Cemetery are in very bad shape (very few stones left). I thought I had a picture of the stone, but was mistaken. I will get there this spring and make one.
I do not have a death-date for Joshua. Do you?
Just thought you night like to know this, in case you did not have this information.
