Nelson served in the Civil War. Ancestry shows that he enlisted as a Private, 23 Oct 1861 in Co. L, 3rd Cavalry and was transferred to Company A, 8th Cavalry on 15 Dec 1865. Mustered out, 20 Jul 1865, at Indianapolis.

Nelson and family lived in Iowa and Hendricks Co, IN, returning to Boone County about 1871. Note: The censuses show the family in Marion Co IN in 1860, and in Boone in 1870.
