(10 May 1784 - 21 May 1841)
EIGHTEENTH CENTURY LANDMARKS OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA, Madalene Vaden Fitzgerald, Frances Hallam Hurt. "Dix-Motley-Thomas House" pp.64-65:
Joseph Motley bought 80 acres from Larkin Dix for $220 (DB 26, p.29) plus 97 acres adjoining from Thomas Dix (DB 26, p.29). Joseph Motley left the 80 acres of the property to his daughter Araminta Thomas, described as being on the Danville-Milton highway. Araminta & her husband William P. Thomas bought 294 acres from Jorden L. Motley on which Thomas was residing on Cane Creek and the North Carolina line. [Jordan Motley was likely a brother to Joseph]
According to various online databases, the father of Joseph was Daniel Motley, born about 1755 in Amelia Co VA and died 20 Oct 1815 in Pittsylvania Co. I found two different wives listed for Daniel - Sarah Hartwell, and Sarah Payne. The date for the marriage to Sarah Payne is 6 Jul 1783 in Pittsylvania Co, but I haven't seen this listed in the marriage bonds.
