Individual Details
Oliver Joseph SHAMPO
(16 Sep 1893 - 14 Sep 1947)
Oliver had a crippled right hand, with the index finger and part of the thumb amputated. This fact is mentioned on both of his draft registration cards (WWI and WWII). There is some small doubt as to whether the 1930 census record cited here actually refers to this same Oliver J. Shampo (see note there), but this reference to the amputated fingers provides a conclusive link from Oliver, the son of Oliver and Sophia, to Oliver Champeau, the husband of Iva.

Notes
Birth
1900 Census reports birth year as 1892, the WWI draft card as 1893.Census
Oliver Shampo, age 16, was a hired hand on the fruit farm of John Hanson.Census
Enumerated with this family were William Shampeau, age 30, a farm laborer; his widowed mother, Sophia Shampeau, age 65; and brother, Oliver, a farm laborer, whose age was reported as 36, but was actually 26.Census
Oliver J. Shampo, age 36, single, was a hired hand on a farm managed by Russell B. Bieri. Was this our same Oliver? The 1940 Census shows him a daughter of the age of 14. Perhaps she a step-child? She was considerably older than the other children, so that is the most likely explanation. Also working on this farm were Frank Shampo, age 62, and Lawrence Shampo, age 30. Frank was probably Oliver's first cousin, the son of David Shampo and Mary Leason.
Census (family)
