Germain Le Sage, "Histoire de Louiseville":
--p. 19: François Banhiac, dit Lamontagne, sabotier by profession -- one of
those from the Lafouille Company who became pioneer settlers of Riviere du Loup
(Louiseville). Age about 24 years. Son of Jean Banhiac and of Françoise Petit.
Originally from Chantrezac, in the diocese of Angouleme.
--p. 26: 1673--It was probably in this year that François Banhiac dit
Lamontagne came to reside in the Seigneurie de Manereuil (the new settlement at
Riviere du Loup was presided over by Charles de Goudon, seigneur de Manereuil).
After the disbanding of the company De la Fouille, he established himself at
the Cote de Beaupre, where he was godfather, on 8 September 1668, of Jacques
Lesot, son of Jacques-François Lesot and Marthe Gagnon, widow of Jean Doyon.
This latter had in her care the little Marie-Madeleine, born of her first
marriage, age nine or ten years. François Banhiac became attached to the
little girl and did not forget her when he moved to Cap-de-la-Madeleine, then
to the Riviere-du-Loup. In this last locality, he acquired a part of the land
of Mathurin Normandin, and there found himself next door to his old regimental
comrade, the voyageur Joachim Germano, with whom he concluded, on 7 February
1674, a notarial concord.
--p. 32: François Banhiac dit Lamontagne married, at thirty-six years, the
adolescent Marie-Madeleine Doyon, age sixteen years, and come to the Cote de
Beaupre where he knew her years ago.
--pp. 33-34: It was the 21st of August 1678 that Father Le Tac came for the
first time to Riviere-du-Loup, where he baptised a newborn: François, son of
François Banhiac dit Lamontagne and Madeleine Doyon. Alas! the joy was
short-lived in this family, for the young mother died six or seven days later.
--pp. 34-35: A short time later (than 3 Apr 1680) François Banhiac dit
Lamontagne was married for the second time to Marie-Angélique Pelletier, age
seventeen years. Daughter of François Pelletier-Antaya and Marguerite
Mauriceau, the new spouse had been born at Sillery and had had for a godfather
the governor D'Avaugour. She was the oldest in a family of eight children who
resided then in the Seigneurie D'Autray, near Berthier-en-haut. Madame
Lamontagne was very welcome at the Riviere-du-Loup, where her qualifications as
a sage-femme would be often employed to great benefit.
--p. 35: On 12 July (1681), François Banhiac and Marie-Angélique Pelletier had
baptized at Sorel, under the name of Marguerite, a little girl, born the
previous 17 April, the distance from a priest and the impossibility of travel
having prevented them from taking her to a church earlier.
--p. 36: Listing on 1881 Census: François Banhiac dit Lamontagne. Sabotier
(maker of wooden shoes), age forty years. Marie Pelletier, his wife, age about
nineteen years. A little boy, François, age three years, child of an earlier
marriage. A little girl, Marguerite, age six months. He (François) possesses a
gun, ten horned beasts, and ten arpents "en valeur."
--p. 37: Inventory of goods of François Banhiac, probably the most prosperous
colonist in Riviere-du-Loup. Must recopy this page! Too many important words
cut off.
--p. 37: The year 1683 began with the baptism of Marie Banhiac, which took
place at (Sorel?) on 28 February.
--p. 47: 21 December (1687), at Sorel, the ( )of a newborn, Antoinette, child
of François Banhiac.
--p. 49: In Autumn of 1688 (because of the constant danger of Iroquois attack),
there were probably only four families left in the Riviere-du-Loup, including
that of François Banhiac. Also those of Marin Marais, François Bergeron, and
Jean de Gerlaise.
A visiting priest baptized Etiennette, a daughter of François Banhiac, on 6
October 1688. The godfather was Marin Marais and the godmother was Madame
Françoise Bergeron.
--p. 52: (after describing the constant terror of Iroquois attack) Still, the
farmers remained there. On 10 July 1692, the cure of Trois-Rivieres, who
baptized Marie-Jeanne Banhiac, mentioned that her parents were "habitants de la
Riviere du Loup."
--p. 53: Again, the same four families are the only ones still sticking it out
at Riviere du Loup.
--p. 56: On 9 December 1700, Father Elisee Crey, Recollet, came there to
baptize a newborn, Charles, ninth child and first son of François Banhiac. (not
true! -- He had a son, François, with his first wife.
