Henry CÔTÉ

(May 1883 - )

-- 1885 Minnesota State Census: Belle Prairie, Morrison, Minnesota, p. 2, family 11, dated 2 May 1885. No wife listed, neither Adelaide or Philomene. Henry, called Honore, was age 2.
-- 1895 Minnesota State Census: Belle Prairie, Morrison, Minnesota, p. 6, family 44, dated June 1895. Adelaide is back! (Called "Delahide.") Henry is not listed though!
-- 1900 U.S. Federal Census: Belle Prairie, Morrison, Minnesota (e.d. 94, p. 14A, lines 25-27, dated 16 Jun 1900). Surname is written as "Cota". Wife's name was Adelaide. Confusing -- it says they were married for forty years, but it also says that Adelaide had borne only one child. Also, her birth month and year are different from those of Philomène. Thus, I conclude that Philomene and Adelaide are not the same person. Philomène must have died shortly after the 1881 Canadian Census, in which she was recorded, and Charles remarried in time for Henry to be born to the second wife in May of 1883. Perhaps Charles was the reporter, and in his imperfect English, he stated that he had been married for forty years, and the enumerator took that to refer to his present wife as well. This census gives Henry's birth month and year.
