According to his grandson, William J. Canfield, Jr., George settled in Dyersville, Iowa, where he was a town marshall and was in construction work. George and Katherine had six children. He later deserted his family and went to Boulder, Colorado, where he had gold and silver mines. When they flooded, he went to Cincinnati to live with his son, Walter. He became a Catholic before he died, and left the nuns $400. He never left any money to his deserted family.
