Census (family)

Charles, Jessie, and Jessie's brother, George Hoag, were living in a rooming house owned by Charlotte Wetherell in Hyde Park. George Hoag, age 33, was a bridge contractor. Charles Haines, age 30 (born June 1870), was working as a salesman. Jessie Haines, age 30 (born Feb 1869), had had two children, neither of whom was still living. These birthdates don't quite match those of our Charles and Jessie, but I think the odds are very high that it is the same couple nonetheless. Lawrence and Frannie were both born in Chicago in the first years of the twentieth century, so it makes sense that their parents would have been living there in 1900. Also, the presence in the same rooming house of George Hoag makes it unlikely that this was some other Charles and Jessie Hines.

Enumerated with this family were Charles L. Hines, age 41, a barber; his wife, Jessie L. Hines, age 41; and children: Lawrence B. Hines, age 9, and Marion F. Hines, age 5. Charles and Jessie had been married for 13 years. She had had three children, two of whom were still living.
