James LAUNDRIE

Obituary:
MADISON-James F. Laundrie, age 83, left this world on Sunday, May 10, 2015 while accompanied by his family at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born March 19, 1932, one of six children raised by Winfred and Mary (Katers) Laundrie in Green Bay. While attending the UW-Madison, Jim met his future wife, Gloria Koeser, in 1952. They married in 1953 and began their family while Jim completed his degree in Chemical Engineering. Jim graduated in 1955 and moved his family to Rapid City, S.D., where he served two years in the Strategic Air Command at Ellsworth Air Force Base as a special weapons officer. In 1957 Jim and Gloria moved to Madison with their first three children. Jim worked 31 years at the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory while also serving with the 128th Air Defense Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. At Forest Products, Jim worked on various USAID projects to develop efficient uses of tropical forests in 21 countries worldwide. He developed an appreciation for different cultures, which he shared with family and friends. Jim was an avid trout fisherman and ice fisherman, and a life-long fan of the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers. Jim enjoyed travel, especially to Norway where he and Gloria developed a close friendship with a family in Oslo. After his retirement Jim worked with RMT for several years studying water quality in the Fox River. He also spent many hours as a volunteer with Messiah Lutheran Church. He loved spending time with his family, especially in outdoor settings that included hunting, fishing, or camping. Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years; daughters, Heidi Laundrie and Dr. Michelle Laundrie Cihla; sons, Jon (Marsha), Andrew (Pam), Jerry, Tony, and David (Laura) Laundrie; his sister, Joyce (Robert) Graves; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons, James Jr. and Robert; daughter-in-law, Laura; brothers, Robert, Lloyd, and Myron; and his sister Marian. A memorial service will be held at MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5202 Cottage Grove Rd., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 16, 2014. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Messiah Church Youth Group or to Agrace HospiceCare. You were a good husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
