Pearl Smith, age 88 years, passed from this earth to her heavenly reward on Saturday, November 30, 2013 in Zephyrhills, FL. Pearl was born on July 7, 1925 in Munising, daughter of the late Clarence and Edna (Bebeau) Bilow.
After being raised and educated in Midland, she graduated from Midland High School in 1944. Pearl married Berton Elwood Smith on May 11, 1946 at St. Brigid's Catholic Church in Midland. Berton preceded her in death on July 4, 2005. Pearl retired from The Dow Chemical Company in 1980, after 28 years in the data processing department. After her retirement she and Bert began wintering in Lakeland, FL, where they were members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for 26 years. During the summer months, they returned to Beaverton, where they were members of St. Anne's Catholic Church. Pearl served as Eucharistic Minister in both parishes. At the time of her death, she was a member of St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church. Pearl was an active member of Sterling Park Shuffle Board Club and the Billing's Senior Citizen Center. After Bert's death, Pearl moved to Zephyrhills, FL for the winters and quickly became a joy to all who her knew her and liked to call her mom. She rarely missed her twice weekly bingo games and often could be seen buzzing about the park in her golf cart. Pearl loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed watching them play, baseball, softball, hockey and soccer. She and Bert followed the games in many states and Canada.
Pearl is survived by daughters, Kay Lynn Rider Lewis and Judy Ann Linton. Pearl loved, respected and was very proud of her three son-in-laws, Bill Linton and Gary Lewis and the late Jack Rider. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Jodi King (Alex) and Bob Linton (Lynette) from Midland; Kurt Rider (Linda) and Kyle Rider (Jill) from Knoxville, TN; and Chuck Marshall (Diane) from Lake Wales, FL. Also surviving are twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandson, many nieces and nephews, one brother-in-law, Donald Bloomfield, and one sister-in-law, Jean Bilow. In addition to her parents and husband, Pearl was preceded in death by her son, Berton Elwood Smith Jr.; granddaughter, Angela Rider; four sisters, Lucille Bilow, Jeanette Bloomfield, Rachel Cornell, and Betty Hinson; four brothers, Robert Bilow, Harold Bilow, Clarence Bilow Jr. and twin brother, Merle Bilow. Pearl loved life and will be truly missed by her family and friends.
The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6, 2013 from St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church. Father Patrick O'Connor will officiate with a 1:30 p.m. burial in New Calvary Cemetery. Pearl's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler Street on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church or the Toni and Trish House.
