Richard was killed in action in France on 25 Jan 1945. His parents were informed that he was Missing in Action, and it was not until April that they received the telegram indicating that he had in fact died.Burial
Dick was buried three different times. First, he was buried by the Germans immediately after his death. For more than two months, his whereabouts were unknown by his Army company, and he was listed as Missing in Action. It was not until the American forces took the town of Gambscheim that the US Army learned of his death, and was able to move his body to the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in St. Avold, France. In late 1948, Dick's remains were finally returned to his home town, and he was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Belle Plaine, Iowa.Endnotes
