Birth
Determining the birthdate of this individual has been confusing for a number of reasons. For one thing, the dates and ages given on the 1900 Census are too close to those of his brother, Alois, for both to be correct. Louis is listed as age 6, born in August 1893, and Alois as age 6, born in February of 1894. FamilySearch has a record for Louis A De Groot, born 16 Feb 1894. The name seems to apply to Matilda's oldest son, Louis, but the date is closer to that given here in the census for Alois. The 1910 Census, dated 15 April 1910, gives ages of 17 for Louis and 16 for Aloysius (Alois). This too seems to indicate that the birth record for "Louis A. De Groot" applies to Alois, not Louis. The record of Louis's death in the Social Security Death Index provides a final piece of evidence in that direction. The SSDI states that Louis was born on 25 Aug 1892. The month of August matches the month, though not the year, given in the 1900 Census -- and as stated above, the year on the 1900 Census was known to be problematic. Conclusion: The birth record for Louis A. De Groot, born 16 Feb 1894, applies to Alois De Groot, not to his older brother, Louis De Groot. Louis DeGroot was born on 25 Aug 1892. This date, from the SSDI, fits reasonably between the marriage of his parents and the birth of his next younger brother.Note: Louis's WWI and WWII Draft Registration Card confirms this conclusion.
