Woods Broyles Cavett

Posted at Legacy.com: Woods Broyles Cavett, Sr., 70, of Jackson, died Friday, November 16 at Miss. Baptist Medical Center after a very brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anne Broyles Cavett and Van Andrew Cavett, Sr.Born in Memphis, Tenn., he moved to Jackson at an early age. He was educated in the Jackson Public Schools and was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1955. He was a 1959 graduate of Millsaps College where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and served as President of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter. He attended Graduate School at The University of Mississippi and is a life-long Rebel fan.
His interest in young people and in sports began during high school when he coached a football team at Duling Elementary. In later years he coached his three sons and their friends in Minor League and Little League Baseball, touching the lives of many young people in the Jackson area.

Woods began his professional career with Scharff and Jones Investments Company in New Orleans, and later in the Jackson office. He then opened Cavett -Hall investments in the mid sixties and was later affiliated with Dean, Witter, Reynolds until the mid 1980' s. At the time of his death, he was involved in commercial real estate in Jackson and Oxford, and was a member of Tico's Round Table.

Woods is survived by: his wife of 49 years, Ida Lou Nelson Cavett; sons, Clay and his wife, Laura, of Oxford, Fred and his wife, Sandi, of Jackson and Woods, Jr. and his wife, Lou Ann of Madison. He is also survived by: seven grandchildren, his pride and joy, John and Madeline of Oxford, Caroline of Jackson, Tay, Lucy, Nash and Duncan of Madison. Woods was affectionately known by his grandchildren as "Poppy." He is also survived by: his brother, Van; and sister-in-law, Caroline Cavett of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; niece, Anne Cavett of Davidson, N.C.; and nephew Andy Cavett of Lookout Mountain, Tenn. Also surviving are a number of very special cousins, life long friends Gene, Jimmy and Bob, a host of good friends and family pet, Frazier.

Woods was a life long member of Galloway United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service will be held today at 11:00 a.m., at Wright and Ferguson, Parkway. Visitation will be there at 10a.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Herbert E. Dewees Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment, P.O. Box 1848, Triplett Alumni Center, University, MS 38677, or Galloway United Methodist Church, 305 N. Congress St, Jackson, MS 39201.

The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses in Emergency and ICU at Miss. Baptist Medical Center for their care and concerns for Woods and his family.
