The Tupelo Journal, Tupelo, Mississippi, Friday, September 19, 1913, Page 1, Col. 2: Dr. H. F. Broyles Killed. A message by telephone on Tuesday morning to Mr. J. E. Motlow informed him that his brother-in-law, Dr. H. F. Broyles had been killed at his home at Greenwood Spring. Mr. and Mrs. Motlow and Miss Frances Broyles, daughter of Dr. Broyles, who is at school here, left on the first rain for Greenwood Springs.
The sad tragedy that resulted in the death of both participates in the unfortunate difficulty grew out of a misunderstand that had existed between, Dr. Broyles and Mr. E. F. Hendricks, of Selmer, Tenn., over a lease which the latter secured several years ago from Dr. Broyles on some timber lands. At the time of the difficulty Dr. Broyles and his little eleven-year-old son, Frank, were opening a dam in a ditch on the land of Dr. Broyles when Mr. Hendrix came up and forbid the Doctor from doing it. Words ensued and Hendricks drew a 32 caliber pistol and fired at Dr. Broyles, striking him in the region of his heart. Dr. Broyles then attacked Hendricks with an ax which he had in his hand striking him on the head, felling him to the ground, and striking him several other bows from which Hendricks died immediately. Dr. Broyles spoke a few words and fell to the ground and breathed his last.
