Southern Illinoisan, Carbondale, Illinois, Wednesday, May 22, 1974, Page 29, Col. 5: Arthur R. Porter, 83, of Dowell, died early today at Marshall Browning Hospital, Du Quoin, after a short illness. He was born Oct. 8, 1890, in England to Richard and Mary J. Abbott Porter. On Oct. 8, 1961, in Dowell, he married Nellie Starkweather. Mr. Porter operated a hardware store in Dowell before retirement. Survivors include his wife; a son, Earl of West Frankfort; daughters, Phyllis Yates of Toronto, Canada, and Jeanette Wood of England; a sister, Edith Rose of England; a brother, Wilfred of England; three step-grandchildren; and eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. One sister, two brothers and one grandchild preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Neal Memorial Chapel, Du Quoin, with the Rev. Robert Gossage, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Du Quoin. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
