Anna Jane Stephens

Dubuque Telegraph Herald, Dubuque, Iowa, Thursday, July 15, 1920, Page 9, Col. 4: Grandma Laughton passed away at her home on Dewey and Jefferson Street after a short Illness. Mrs. Ann Laughton, Nee Anna Stephens, was born in Cornwell, England, February 3, 1827. When fifteen years of age she came to America with her parents. In the year of 1844 she was united in marriage with William Laughton. Nine children were born to this union, one of whom Alfred died in infancy and William of this city who passed away two years ago. The surviving children are: John R. Laughton, Fred, Miss Marcia Laughton and Mrs. Annie K. Stephens of this city, Mrs. Mary Rundell, Platteville, O. S. Laughton of Livingston and George Laughton of Lemars. Mrs. Laughton's husband was a captain on the Mississippi River for a period of thirty or more years, his boat plying between St. Louis and St. Paul. This well known man passed away in the year of 1883. Mrs. Laughton who was in her ninety fourth years was a very remarkable woman. Although an invalid for the past three or four years, she possessed an active mind and kept up interest in things and people about her. Besides her children she is survived by one brother, John Stephens of North Dakota, and two sisters, Jane Welch of New York State and Mrs. Louise Rockett of Platteville, also eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grand-children. All of the children will be here for the funeral which will be held from the home Wednesday, the Rev. Wm. A. Lodwick of the Congregational church officiating. Burial will be made at Hillside cemetery.
