Samuel Mahffey Kirkpatrick

Kirkpatrick, son of Hugh and Malinda Kirkpatrick, was born near Freeport, Ohio, Jan. 2nd 1866, and passed away at the Huntington Nursing Home in Creston, Jan. 30th, 1958, at the age of 92 years, 28 days. At 17th age of sixteen he came with his parents to a farm in Adair Co., Iowa and two years later moved to Adams county where he spent 71 years. The last four years he has lived in Creston. In his early years he was a school teacher, later he turned to farming. He also served several years on the board of supervisors. He sold the farm in 1907 and purchased the general store in Carl which he operated until 1911. He was united in marriage to Stella May Oliver March 9th, 1890, who preceded him in death June 9th 1935 [1939]. To this union three daughters were born: Mrs. Clara Antisdel, Prescott, Mrs. Lillie Antisdel, Carl, and Mrs. Irma Davis, Bellingham, Wash., who survived him. Also one son-in-law, Lynn Antisdel; 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, three great-great-children and many nephews and nieces. After retirement and declining health he made his home with his daughters except the past three years he spent with and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Kirkpatrick of Creston where he was given loving care until he was confined to his bed and on Dec. 19th 1957, he entered the Huntington Nursing Home where he passed away.
He joined the Carl Methodist church when a young man and was still a member. he was the last surviving member of his family. His parents, five brothers and two sisters had preceded him in death. He had always taken an active part in his church and community affairs as long as health permitted. He spent his leisure hours reading and kept himself well read on all national and civic affairs and was able to do this until the last two months. He will be greatly missed by his family, relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 2, 1958, at 2:30 p.m. in the Carl Methodist church, with Joe Cook officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Eva Elmore, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Kathleen Cook. Pallbearers were Joe Gourley, E. Porter Hunter, Walter Heatherington, Ray McGrath, Rex Maxedon, and Oral Maxedon. Interment was in Carl cemetery.
