William Cartwright Smith
(24 Mar 1826 - 10 May 1887)
Daily Illinois State Register, Springfield, Illinois, Wednesday, May 11, 1887, Page 3, Col. 3: Smith---At his home on Ninth street, between Capitol avenue and Jackson street, Tuesday afternoon, May 10, William C. Smith, aged 61 years. Mr. Smith had been in feeble health for some time past, being a great sufferer from dropsy, which finally resulted in his death. He belongs to one of the best known families in this county, his father, John Smith, familiarly known as "Uncle Johnnie Smith," having moved to this county as early as 1822, and being still a hale, hearty old man residing on his farm in Curran township. Mr. Smith has lived in this county all his life. He was born March 24th, 1826, and married Miss Rebecca J. Walker, June 14, 1844. He leaves besides his faithful wife, a large family of children and grandchildren. His children are John D., William J., and Joseph F., all farmers and residents of Curran and Woodside townships, Richard P. Smith, of this city, lately deputy sheriff under Sheriff Malone; Hiram N. Smith of Oxford, Kas., Martha J. who married Wm. Kirkpatrick, of Carthage, Ill., and Mary and Edward the two youngest who live at home. Although in some sense expected, Mr. Smith's death was nevertheless a great shock to the members of his family, and arrangements for the funeral cannot be made until the absent ones can be heard from. Mr. Smith having by frugality and strict attention to business accumulated a comfortable property, some years ago left his farm and came to the city of live, where he might pass his old age in ease and comfort. He has many friends, both here and in the country who will hear of his death with sorrow and sympathize deeply with his grief-stricken family.
