Day Jewell

Day Jewell was born 30 May 1895. He married 10 September 1921 to Dorothy Tuthill, daughter of Arthur Brewster and Valerie Inez (Kelly) Tuthill. Dorothy (Tuthill) Jewell was born 19 August 1896 at Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California*. Jewell was a professional soldier. He achieved the rank of Major, perhaps higher, but we have no information as to his service activity such as date of commission, regiments, actions, etc. He made a major beginning on a study of his particular Kirkpatrick family and although some of his information and surmises were incorrect, he must be credited with making a fine beginning.
There were three (3) children born of the marriage.

* Day Jewell in his paper, states that his wife is in the tenth generation down from Mayflower passenger John Alden. He says she is also descended from Nathaniel Brewster and Sarah Ludlow.

Corona Daily Independent, Corona, California, Monday, June 18, 1962, Front Page, Col. 6: Day Jewell Dies While Installing Cement Walk. Corona has lost one of its most active American Legionnaires. Day Jewell, 67, of 712 West Eleventh St., passed away Saturday while working on a concrete walk at the First Congregational Church, 807 Ramona Ave.
He was suddenly stricken with what was thought to be a heart attack. The fire department resuscitator unit was called as well as two local physicians, but he died before he could be moved to a hospital.
Born May 30, 1895, in Bell, he attended schools in Downey and was graduated from Downey High School in 1914. He went into the Army in 1917 and received a commission June 5, 1918, retiring in 1929 as a first lieutenant.
He and his family came to Corona in 1930 when he opened the Corona Insurance Agency. He was called back to the service in 1942 and retired again from the service in 1948 with the rank of major. He then reopened his insurance agency which he sold in 1953.
Mr. Jewell was a member of the First Congregational Church, a past commander of the William H. Jameson Jr. Post 216, American Legion. He was a member of Forty and Eight Voiture Number 394 in Riverside and of Temescal Lodge 314 F & AM.
He was a charter member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of San Bernardino and was a member of Al Malaikah Shrine in Los Angeles. He was also a member of the Riverside Shrine Club. Mr. Jewell is survived by his widow, Dorothy T. of Corona; three daughters, Mrs. Eileen (Mickey) Pauly of Anaheim, Mrs. Shirley O'Connor of Fort Holabird, Md. and Mrs. Virginia (Gege) Ashlock of Canoga Park; 10 grandchildren, one brother, Thomas E. of Palm Desert; and three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Weatherbee of Santa Barbara, Mrs. Ada Jewell of San Diego and Mrs. Ivy Lang of Brookings, Ore. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Thomas Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. C. Fred Hutslar Jr. of the First Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Corona. Friends may call at the Thomas Mortuary.
