The Commercial Dispatch, Columbus, Mississippi, Tuesday, December 20, 2005: McAllen - James "Jim" Betts Egger, 82, of McAllen, died on Dec. 16, 2005. Memorial services were today at 10 a.m. at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen. At a later date, burial will be at the Egger Family Cemetery in Caledonia. Mr. Egger was born in Columbus on Aug. 10, 1923. He earned an appointment to the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. While at West Point, he was a member of the Honor Committee, a "Star" man and captain of the Army track team. After graduating from USMA and being commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1947, he served in Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Hawaii and numerous installations in the continental U.S. One of his most significant assignments was, after being sent to Vanderbilt University for an advanced degree, as an instructor in psychology and leadership at the USMA. After 26 years of service in the Army, Col. Egger retired and returned to his childhood home in Caledonia, establishing a farm. He also taught at Itawamba Junior College in Fulton for seven years. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy "Dotti" J. Egger; daughter, Janet Fox of Baton Rouge, La.; son, Jim Egger Jr. of McAllen; and five grandchildren.
