Mrs. Anton Jenkins, Another Of Pioneer Mothers, Passes On. Gothenburg Woman Called By death After A Lingering Illness, Nearly Eighty. Mrs. Anton Jenkins, another of the pioneer mothers of the Gothenburg community passed away Sunday after an Illness of several years. She would have been eighty years of age next September 14. Ida May Tompkins was born at El Paso, Illinois, on Sept. 14, 1860, and departed this life at Gothenburg, Nebr., on Feb. 18, 1940. On Oct. 19, 1879, she was united in marriage to Anton Jenkins and eight children were born to the union, five of whom with the father, preceded her in death. Moving to Nebraska in 1882, Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins located on a homestead northeast of Gothenburg and for 58 years she had been a resident of the community. A member of the Evangelical church for many years, Mrs. Jenkins joined the Methodist church of Gothenburg in 1914.
Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Kirkpatrick of Laramie, Wyo., and Mrs. Mae Johnson of Denver, Colo.; one son, Henry L. Jenkins of Gothenburg; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; many other relatives and a long list of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from Sholund funeral home, conducted by Rev. E. H. Maynard, pastor of the Methodist church. Pallbearers were Evert Block, John Kruse, Hilding Pearson, Ted McNeal, Clarence McNeal and Frank Aden. Interment was in the Grandview cemetery. Gothenburg Times, Thur., Feb. 22, 1940, Page 1, Col. 3.
