Galva News, Galva, Illinois, Thursday, May 19, 1932, Page 8, Col. 1: Irvin Ingels, Nurseryman, Killed In Ohio. Services for LaFayette Man Friday Afternoon. Residents of LaFayette and community were shocked by the tragic death late Monday night of Irvin Ingels, 71, proprietor of LaFayette Home Nursery, who was fatally injured in an automobile crash which occurred near West Jefferson, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. Mr. Ingles was on a motor trip to Snow Hill, Maryland, where he was to visit his sister, Mrs. Mary DeGulbert, who is critically ill. He was traveling alone.

Although few details were given in the telegram received at might Monday by LaFayette relatives, it was learned that Mr. Ingels died at Mt. Carmel hospital in Columbus several hours after the accident. He was found unconscious beside his automobile in a field, the car skidding on the pavement and crashing through a fence. The injured man was discovered by Dr. R. B. Drury, of Columbus, who took him at once to the hospital.

James Ingels of Peoria, and J. R. Osterberg, of Riverside, son and son-in-law respectively of Mr. Ingles, left early Tuesday morning for Columbus and they will accompany the body of LaFayette. It is expected that they will arrive in Peoria early Thursday morning. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at LaFayette M. E. church.

Born Near LaFayette.
Irvin Ingels, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ingels, was born December 19, 1858, on a farm two miles south of LaFayette. When he was two years old, he moved with his parents to the present home at the northwest edge of LaFayette, known as Ingelwood, and for nearly three-quarters of a century he lived there. His parents passed away many years ago, his father being accidentally killed in Florida in 1883.

His early education was received from the LaFayette schools and he later attended Eureka college at Eureka. He was united in marriage to Miss Ida [Eliza] Ryder, of Toulon, and to this union were born the following children: James, of Peoria; Mrs. Gertrude Potter, of Rocky Ford, Colorado; Gaar, of LaFayette; Mrs. Ada Rhudie of Manila, Philippine Islands; Mrs. Golda Osterberg, of Riverside, Illinois; and Sherman, of Tacoma, Washington.

Mrs. Ingels passed away about 30 years ago and he was again married to Miss Rozella Garner. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ingles; Corliss, of LaFayette; Robert, teacher and athletic coach at Armstrong, Illinois, and Evalyn Rozella, who died when she was three years old. Once more death entered the Ingels' home and claimed Mr. Ingles' companion. Some years late, he was married to Miss Anna Carmack, a native of Scotland, and to this union was born one daughter, Mary, who is a student in LaFayette Grace School. Mrs. Ingels passed away in 1931.

Besides his children, Mr. Ingles is survived by one brother, Sherman Ingles, of McGregor, Minnesota, and one sister, Mrs. Mary DeGjulbert, of Snow Hill, Maryland, to whose home he was on his way at the time of the fatal accident. He also leaves 12 grandchildren.

Established Home Nursery.
Mr. Ingels established the LaFayette Home Nursery about 50 years ago and he built an extensive business which is known throughout this section. Nursery stock comprises some 30 acres. In connection with the nursery, his son, Garr Ingles opened a greenhouse in 1914 and although the nursery and greenhouse are operated separately, both occupy the same premises. A few years ago a branch office of the nursery was opened in Peoria and is managed by another son, James Ingels.

Mr. Ingels inherited his love of Horticulture from both parents, his father, James Ingels, being much interested in growing fruit trees, and his mother taking much pride and interest in a small greenhouse attached to the home where she grew many plants.

Approximately eight carloads of nursery stock are shipped annually from LaFaytte and Mr. Ingels has also done considerable landscape work, having to his credit the ornamentation of grounds of several public institutions and private homes. He has over 100 varieties of hardy shrubs and 25 varieties of evergreen trees in his nursery. Until the embargo was placed on importation on account of insect pests, each year he imported much stock from foreign countries.

Serving as a monument to his memory, many evergreens from the nursery were donated recently by Mr. Ingles for decorative purposes along the hard road both east and west of LaFayette. There were 702 trees included in the magnificent donation and the plans for planting them were drawn up by the donor. He also personally superintended the planting. This was only one of many examples of this public spirited qualifications and in his passing LaFayette and community lost a valuable citizen.
